Master-at-Arms of the 1595 Club

Chris is a full-time teacher of martial arts. He comes from a background of boxing & sports/classical fencing, first studying the art of the sword under Master Jeff Elmes in 1987.

Wishing to discover a more martial approach to the sword he began his study of Saviolo in 1999 & in 2002 co-founded the 1595 Club with the aim of forming a school concentrating upon an examination and practice of Saviolo’s principles of swordplay and using them as a basis for a system of combat.

Since that time he has been invited to teach, demonstrate, lecture and fence throughout the UK, as well as Italy, Spain, Malta, France & Finland by historical fencing associations and martial arts schools. He has also worked with several museums including the Wallace Collection and the National Army Museum,

He teaches at both the London and Brighton salles.

Gray joined The 1595 Club in 2002.

In 2011 he became the first to rise to the position of 1595 Provost. He has travelled throughout the UK as well as France, Italy, Malta, Myanmar and Spain demonstrating, fencing, and in the role of assistant instructor.

Gray has also been invited to teach classes by both the Spanish and Maltese Federations for Historical Fencing.

Gray is an assistant instructor at the Brighton salle.

George Livermore

George teaches English as a foreign language.

He comes from a background of Rugby Union - both as a player and coach in the UK and Australia.

He joined the 1595 Club in 2002 and has travelled throughout the UK as well as France, Italy, Malta, the Philippines and Spain demonstrating, fencing and as an assistant instructor. George became the second Provost of the 1595 Club in 2013.

George is an assistant instructor at the Brighton salle.

Ben Walsh

Ben is an academic nephrologist in London.

His background in martial arts is in Nam Pai Chaun kung fu, which he studied under Sifu Steve Leppard.

Ben joined the 1595 club in 2011 and became the 10th Free Scholar in March 2012.

He is a founder member of the 1595 London Salle.

Ash O’Rourke

Ash is a professional musician.

As a martial artist he comes from a background of Sports fencing - where he studied under Mac & Nick Jaeger, becoming West Sussex Junior Foil Captain and competing in France & England. He later went on to study Goju Ryu under Sensei Nick Haynes.

Ash joined the 1595 Club in July 2011 and was the 9th person to graduate to the rank of Free Scholar in December of that year.

After moving to Donegal in early 2013 he founded the Irish Chapter if the 1595 Club.

Luca works as a banker. He started to practise Historical Fencing in 2006 with FISAS under the guidance of Maestro Andrea Lupo Sinclair. His interest in Renaissance martial arts and the consciousness of the importance of unarmed combat in the study of the military rapier led him to look for inspiration in boxing and ju-jitsu. He joined the 1595 Club in 2013 and then established the 1595 Club salle of Milan with Jamie Steele. In 2015 he opened a new salle in Belluno.

Jamie teaches at an international school in Milan.

He began practising Historical Fencing/Western Martial Arts in 2006 with the Sussex Rapier School (now known as the Sussex Sword Academy). Under the tutorship of Master Andrew Feest, Jamie studied primarily the rapier and accompanying weapons for four years, during which time, he assisted in workshops and demonstrations in Italy, Spain and the UK. He moved to Milan in 2010 and joined the Fratres in Enses salle of FISAS. Here he studied the longsword, side sword, rapier and sabre with Maestros Max Bonelli and Andrea Lupo Sinclair. He joined the 1595 Club in 2013.

He runs the 1595 salle in Milan.

Mark Brogan

Mark is an Account and Acquisition Manager at a local Irish company. His first serious martial training began with Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim in 2003 in Boston, USA. A few years after returning home he became one of the founding members of the Irish Chapter of the 1595 Club and its first member to attain the rank of Free Scholar. He makes wasters & other custom-made wooden training equipment for himself and other 1595 salles, along with teaching workshops around the country. Mark is captain of the 1595 salle in Letterkenny.
