If you happened to chance upon the Independent on Sunday on the 3rd January you will have seen on page 24 of The Review that there was a rather fantastic feature on the 1595 Club's London salle! You can read the article in full here.
The HEMA Shop - Club Membership
The 1595 has once again signed up as a Club Member of the HEMA shop. Good quality local suppliers of suitable equipment for our art are hard to find and we are pleased that the HEMA Shop are happy to support us by offering our club members discounts on some of the more critical products associated with our practice.
The 5th International Fencing Meeting - Maltese Historical Fencing Association
The 1595's George Livermore recently attended the 5th International Fencing Meeting in Malta and has sent us the following missive from his travels:
The 1595 just returned from the 5th international fencing meeting in Malta, this year the event was held in the wonderful and historically rich Fort St Angelo. The setting could not have been better, sun, fencing and of course lots and lots of history. Did make one feel as though we were truly knights training and preparing for the great siege. In fact, our one and only Cave Troll commandeered the fort and has renamed it 'Fort St Walrus Troll', in honour of himself (he does like to praise himself) and our illustrious leader.
A garrison has been left at Fort St Walrus Troll so as to ensure its availability for next year's event.
The 1595 held two classes on the use of the partisan and the body mechanics involved. The classes went well with the students in attendance taking a lot away from them.
Our illustrious club wasn't the only one in attendance, some truly great fencers and masters from all over Europe and the U.S. were also present. The masters/maestros and what they taught:
Andrea Lupo Sinclair: FISAS, Italy, Sword and Dagger
Andrei Xuereb: MHFA, Malta, Sword and shield
Andrew Feest: SSA, UK, Longsword
Manoucher Moshtagh Khorasani: Razmafzar, Germany, Shamsir, Separ and Khanjar
Mark P Donnelly: KADS, USA, Bartitsu
Robert Brooks Hotspur School of Defence, UK, Longsword
The Maltese Historical Fencing Association must be congratulated for once again holding such a wonderful event, not only for the martial arts side of it but also the hospitality that they always show to one and all.
I for one cannot wait for next year's 6th international meeting. And we would urge you to attend as this is truly a one of a kind event for hospitality and fencing.
A special mention to the sorely missed Ollie Reed, to whom many glasses were raised and bouts dedicated to!

1st Gathering of the Salles
On the 25th & 26th September the 1595 Club Chapters from the UK, Ireland and Italy met in Brighton for the first Gathering of the Salles. Since its inception in 2002, the 1595 Club has continued to grow, and we now have seven salles spread across three countries so this seemed the perfect opportunity to get as many of us together as possible. We were delighted to have attendees from all three countries travelling to the home of the 1595 Club in Brighton. The weekend consisted of unarmed and cane classes and free play with sabre and our trusty 1595er rapiers, as well as Mark from the Irish Chapter taking his Free Scholar test. It was truly a marvellous weekend, and our thanks go to everyone who attended and worked so hard to make the event such a roaring success!
