Sword & Shield

The round Target would require a long & most exquisite consideration because it is of circular forme, most capable, and most perfect of all others.
Giacomo di Grassi

Because of the defensive properties that the shield offers, the sword and shield was perhaps the most universal weapon combination to be found across the world. Usually made of steel and with a diameter of, on average, around 24 inches and weighing anything up to 9lb, the European round shield, buckler, rondella or target was devastatingly effective as both a defensive and offensive weapon and was still being used to great effect (especially by the Spanish ‘Sword-and-Buckler men’) on the battlefields of sixteenth century Europe.
