The 1595’s Chris Chatfield will be running a workshop on Saviolo’s sidesword
“By the sudden shifting of a foot a man is overtaken and slain”
An introduction to the techniques and philosophy of Vincentio Saviolo.
Saviolo’s treatise can be looked at as a ‘finishing school’ for the swordsman. The techniques and exercises explored concentrate on a sophistication of footwork and body mechanic that open up a world of possibilities in terms of timing, proportion, setting traps, and compound attacks.
The workshop will look at and examine some of these exercises and principals as applied to the single sword (and the art of the off hand).
Chris Chatfield comes from a background of boxing and sports fencing.
He founded the 1595 Club in 2002 in Brighton. The club now has chapters in London, as well as in Italy (Milan, Beluno,) and Ireland (Galway, Letterkenny).
He is a full-time teacher of martial arts.
